Sighișoara with kids: what they love, what to avoid and how to keep them curious

A day in Sighișoara with children: towers, stairs, stamps and stories, plus practical tips on pushchairs, breaks and the Torture Chamber.

Sighișoara with kids: what they love, what to avoid and how to keep them curious

Sighișoara is one of the most child-friendly places in Romania: the Citadel is small and full of towers, gates and stairs, and every corner has a story.

What children love

  • The Clock Tower: the figurines on the clock and the climb to the top gallery, from where you can see the whole town.
  • The Covered Staircase: about 175 wooden steps under a roof. For many children it is the best part of the day.
  • The guild towers: the Blacksmiths', the Shoemakers', the Tailors'. Each tower was defended by a guild, and children can guess the trade from the name.
  • The collection of medieval weapons, in the same building as the Clock Tower.
  • The Sighișoara Medieval Festival at the end of July, with knights, music and street shows. Entry is free.

What to watch out for

  • The streets are cobbled and steep, and the Covered Staircase has many steps. A baby carrier is more practical than a pushchair.
  • The Torture Chamber may frighten young children; you decide whether to go in.
  • In summer bring water and hats: there is little shade in Citadel Square at midday.
  • Reduced museum prices for pupils: Clock Tower 15 lei, weapons 5 lei, Torture Chamber 4 lei (2026 prices).

How to keep them curious

The Explore Sighișoara digital guide has a special family route and a stamp game: at every sight the child gets a stamp, and at the end an explorer's diploma. The guide opens on your phone, no app needed: https://ghid.exploresighisoara.ro/en

A half-day route

  • Citadel Square and the Clock Tower (1 hour, with the museum).
  • The Covered Staircase and the Church on the Hill (1 hour).
  • A walk around the towers on the walls, with a play break (1 hour).
  • Lunch and ice cream.
