Where to stay in Sighișoara: in the Citadel or in the Lower Town?

The pros and cons of staying in the medieval Citadel versus the Lower Town: atmosphere, parking, luggage, quiet and price.

Where to stay in Sighișoara: in the Citadel or in the Lower Town?

When you look for a place to stay in Sighișoara, the first decision is not the hotel but the area: up in the medieval Citadel or down in the town.

Staying in the Citadel

  • The atmosphere is unique: you sleep in an old house in a lived-in medieval town, and in the evening, after the groups have left, the streets are yours.
  • You are a few steps from the Clock Tower, the Covered Staircase and the restaurants on Citadel Square.
  • Car access to the Citadel is restricted. Ask your host in advance where to park and how to get there with your luggage.
  • The streets are cobbled and steep, which matters with big suitcases, small children or reduced mobility.
  • Prices are generally higher, and on summer weekends and festival days rooms fill up early.

Staying in the Lower Town

  • Parking is easier and the railway station is close: about 1 km to the Clock Tower, or 15–20 minutes on foot.
  • Prices are usually lower and there is more choice.
  • You can walk up to the Citadel in 5–15 minutes, depending on where you stay.

Which choice suits whom

  • Couples, city breaks, first visits: the Citadel, for the atmosphere.
  • Families with a car and luggage: the Lower Town, or a place in the Citadel with guaranteed parking.
  • Arriving by train: the Lower Town, near the station.
  • The Medieval Festival (end of July): book months ahead, wherever you stay.

Good to know

  • Public parking is paid on weekdays and Saturdays; on Sundays and public holidays it is free.
  • If you stay in the Citadel, ask your host to confirm parking in writing.
