Citadel Square: the story of Sighișoara's main square
Markets, the pillory and the great fire of 1676: what to look for in Citadel Square, from the Stag House to the Venetian House.
Citadel Square is not just a place you pass through. This is where the townspeople met, where markets were held and where important news was announced. Look at each façade on its own and you will see how different the houses are that together make up the square.
Come back in the evening, when the pace changes and the light brings out the shapes of the buildings.
Markets, council and punishment
In the Middle Ages the square was the commercial and civic centre of the Saxon town: markets were held here and the guilds gathered here. This is also where the pillory stood, where people convicted of petty offences were put on display with a heavy stone hung around their neck. The 6-kilogram stone is still kept today in the Torture Chamber beneath the Clock Tower. Travel guides also mention public executions and witch trials held in the square.
The houses rebuilt after the fire
On 30 April 1676 a fire that started in the Lower Town spread to the Citadel within a few hours. Most of the houses were rebuilt afterwards, which explains the mix of styles you see today. A few buildings to look for:
- The Stag House, from the 17th century, with the stag's head on its corner. It belonged to a wealthy merchant family and became a hotel in 1996.
- The Venetian House, named after its Venetian-style window frames.
- The Fronius House, nearby, one of the few houses that came through the fire almost untouched; wall paintings from around 1450–1500 were found inside.
The square today
The square is still the heart of the Citadel. It is the main stage of the Sighișoara Medieval Festival at the end of July, and the Christmas market is held here in December. The rest of the year it is the best place for a coffee with a view of the façades.
