Day trips from Sighișoara: Biertan, Viscri, Saschiz and more
The best day trips from Sighișoara: UNESCO fortified churches, Saxon villages, Mediaș and the Breite Plateau, with distances, driving times and a full-day route idea.
Sighișoara is a great base for the Saxon villages around it. In less than an hour's drive you reach three of the fortified churches that are on the UNESCO World Heritage list, together with Sighișoara's citadel.
Breite Plateau (3 km, 10 minutes)
Right above the town, a nature reserve with one of the most important wood pastures of ancient oaks in Europe. Some of the oaks are several hundred years old. It is the shortest outing: a half-day walk, especially lovely in spring and at sunset.
Saschiz (20 km, 25 minutes)
The fortified church, built around 1493, has a tower so similar to the Clock Tower that many call it its "little brother". On the hill above the village are the ruins of the peasant fortress. Saschiz is also known for its blue pottery, a craft brought back to life in recent years.
Biertan (28 km, 35 minutes)
One of the most impressive Saxon fortified churches, with three rings of walls, on the UNESCO list since 1993. From 1572 to 1867 it was the seat of the Lutheran bishops of Transylvania. Inside: the largest polyptych altar in Transylvania and a sacristy door with an ingenious lock. The local legend is the "reconciliation room": it is said that couples who wanted to divorce were locked in together in a tiny room with a single bed and a single spoon.
Mălâncrav (35 km, 45 minutes)
A quiet village of orchards whose Lutheran church holds the richest set of Gothic wall paintings in Transylvania, painted around 1350.
Mediaș (40 km, 45 minutes)
A Saxon town with the Trumpeters' Tower, almost 69 metres tall and leaning by more than two metres. A local tradition says Vlad the Impaler was held prisoner here; the documents do not confirm it.
Viscri (45 km, about an hour)
The best-known Saxon village: one wide street, colourful houses and, on the hill, the white fortified church, on the UNESCO list since 1999, with a small museum of Saxon life. Cars cannot enter the village: leave yours in the car park at the entrance.
A full-day idea
Sighișoara → Dumbrăveni (the Armenian cathedral and a lunch stop) → Mediaș → Biertan → back to Sighișoara. About 110 km, a relaxed day.
