Sighișoara in one day: a step-by-step route, timings and what is worth paying for

A realistic one-day route for Sighișoara: the order of the sights, how long to spend at each, which tickets are worth it and where to have lunch, with checked practical information.

Sighișoara in one day: a step-by-step route, timings and what is worth paying for

Sighișoara's citadel is small: from the Clock Tower to the Church on the Hill it is only a few hundred metres. That does not mean you can see it in 30 minutes. With museums, a lunch break and a walk through the Lower Town, a full day fills up easily.

At a glance

  • Citadel essentials: about 3 hours on foot, without museums.
  • With the History Museum in the Clock Tower and the Church on the Hill: 5–6 hours.
  • Entry to the citadel is free; you only pay for museums and some monuments.
  • Comfortable shoes: the streets are cobbled and steep.

Morning: the Clock Tower and Citadel Square (9:00–11:30)

Start at the Clock Tower, the citadel's main gate. It houses the History Museum, and the gallery at the top offers the best panorama over the town. The museum is closed on Mondays; see opening hours and prices below. Then step out into Citadel Square, the heart of the medieval town, and walk past the Vlad Dracul House where, according to tradition, Vlad the Impaler was born.

Up the hill: the Covered Staircase and the Church on the Hill (11:30–13:00)

The Covered Staircase, also called the Schoolboys' Stairs, climbs about 175 steps under a wooden roof to the Church on the Hill and the old cemetery. The Gothic church charges an entry fee (around 20 lei, according to recent guides) and cannot be visited during services.

Lunch (13:00–14:30)

There are several restaurants with Transylvanian cooking in the citadel and around Citadel Square. In summer, especially at weekends, book ahead or have lunch early. See also our page on where to eat in Sighișoara: https://exploresighisoara.ro/en/article/where-to-eat-in-sighisoara

Afternoon: the guild towers and the Lower Town (14:30–18:00)

Walk along the walls and towers: the Blacksmiths' Tower, the Shoemakers' Tower, the Tailors' Tower. Then go down to the Lower Town, with its shopping streets and early 20th-century buildings. Towards evening, climb back up to the citadel: once the tour groups have left, the streets are much quieter.
