Where to eat in Sighișoara: in the citadel, in the Lower Town and what to order
Where to eat well in Sighișoara: our recommendation, Cafe Martini & Habermann, plus what to order from Transylvanian cooking and how to avoid the high-season crowds.
You eat well in Sighișoara if you know two things: in the citadel you also pay for the atmosphere, and in summer, at weekends, the good places fill up fast.
Our recommendation: Cafe Martini & Habermann
Cafe Martini & Habermann is one of the best-loved places in Sighișoara, known for its welcoming atmosphere, varied menu and very good coffee. It works for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a break with friends. For us, this is where you find the best fried papanași in town (Dubai style with pistachio cream, or classic with blueberry jam), and the burgers come with fries included. You'll find it on Hermann Oberth Square, at the foot of the citadel, right below the Clock Tower, so it is easy to combine with your visit: breakfast before you climb up to the citadel or dinner after you come down.

In the citadel
The restaurants in the citadel are in old houses, many with vaulted cellars or terraces on cobbled lanes. The atmosphere is unique, but prices are generally higher than in the Lower Town, and in high season tables go quickly. Check opening hours in advance, especially off-season, when some places have shorter hours.
What to order
- Meatball soup or soup served in a bread bowl.
- Sarmale (cabbage rolls) with polenta and sour cream.
- Tocăniță or goulash, the Hungarian influence in Transylvanian cooking.
- Papanași or Saxon pastries for dessert.
Tips
- In summer, at weekends and on festival days, book or eat before 13:00 or after 15:00.
- For a quiet breakfast before your visit, choose a place at the foot of the citadel: you then walk up in a few minutes.
- For a day trip, our guide also recommends lunch in the surroundings, at Dumbrăveni.
