Sighișoara in two days: a weekend between the citadel, the Lower Town and the fortified churches

Two days is the ideal pace for Sighișoara: one for the citadel and the town, one for the Saxon villages around it and their fortified churches.

Day 1: the citadel, without rushing

Follow the route in our "Sighișoara in one day" article (https://exploresighisoara.ro/en/article/sighisoara-in-one-day-itinerary): the Clock Tower and History Museum in the morning, the Covered Staircase and the Church on the Hill before lunch, the guild towers and the Lower Town in the afternoon. The difference from a day trip is that you can stay in the citadel in the evening. After sunset the streets empty and the town looks completely different.

Day 2: a trip into the surroundings

Three classic destinations, all with Saxon fortified churches:

• Saschiz: about 20 km east on the DN13. The fortified church and the peasant fortress on the hill. The closest option, good for half a day.
• Biertan: about 30 km, roughly 30 minutes by car. One of the best-known fortified churches in Transylvania, with several rings of walls.
• Viscri: about 40–50 km, roughly 45 minutes; leave the DN13 at Bunești. Cars are not allowed into the village; you leave the car in the car park at the village entrance.

Saschiz, Viscri and Biertan have fortified churches listed as UNESCO World Heritage, together with Sighișoara's citadel.

Weekend tips

• Saturday is the busiest day in the citadel; keep it for the trip and Sunday morning for the citadel.
• On Sundays and public holidays public parking in Sighișoara is free.
• The History Museum is closed on Mondays: on a long weekend, don't leave the Clock Tower for Monday.
